The Deregulation Frenzy

A Corporate Power Grab at the Expense of Workers and Society

In an era where corporate interests shape the political agenda, deregulation is increasingly sold as a route to economic freedom. In reality, this so-called "liberation" is little more than a deliberate strategy to concentrate power in the hands of the wealthy elite. The result is a growing divide between the ultra-rich and the rest of society, with vulnerable communities bearing the brunt, as corporations are free to maximize profits with little regard for the consequences.

The American Context: Trump and Musk

In the United States, Donald Trump's presidency has been characterized by an aggressive push for deregulation, favoring corporate interests over public welfare. His administration has rolled back numerous environmental and labor regulations, under the pretext that such measures are burdensome to businesses. In practice, these policies have devastating consequences for workers, public health, and the environment.

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO behind Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures, has become a vocal advocate for deregulation, claiming that government oversight stifles innovation. Yet his true aim is to further enrich himself and his corporate empire, while sidestepping critical regulations that protect workers and the environment. Under the guise of reducing government waste, Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cut federal spending, downsized the federal workforce, and attacked diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Musk claims to have saved taxpayers billions of dollars, but the actual impact of these measures remains unclear. Moreover, DOGE has been embroiled in controversies surrounding data privacy and the mass termination of federal employees, raising serious concerns about its effectiveness and accountability.

The Polish Context: Tusk and Brzoska

In Poland, former Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the current leadership of the Civic Platform (PO) have been actively pushing the adoption of neoliberal economic policies that prioritize deregulation and corporate interests. Tusk’s alliance with Rafał Brzoska, a Polish billionaire and the CEO of InPost, is a striking example of this trend. Donald Tusk has entrusted Brzoska with the task of developing recommendations to streamline regulations and cut red tape, all in the name of boosting investment and "stimulating economic growth". Often referred to as the "Polish Elon Musk," Brzoska has been a vocal critic of government regulations, arguing that they hinder economic growth. In reality, this rhetoric serves to line the pockets of the Polish business elites, including Brzoska himself, while workers face the consequences of reduced protections and rights.

Tusk plans to push through the sweeping deregulation package immediately after the second round of the 1 June presidential election. Around 120 bills will be introduced in what he calls the most significant legal overhaul since Poland’s 2004 EU accession.

This initiative is part of Tusk’s broader economic agenda, which mirrors the deregulatory efforts of figures like Trump and Musk. Both politicians and corporate leaders seem intent on embracing a business-friendly agenda that leaves workers and environmental protections in the dust. Like Trump’s blitz of executive actions or Musk’s rapid corporate restructuring, Tusk’s plan appears designed to overwhelm opposition and limit scrutiny by pushing a massive legislative package through parliament in a compressed time frame.

The Need for Critical Reflection in Polish Politics

Polish politicians must learn from the mistakes made in the United States and resist the siren call of deregulation. Poland has the opportunity to take a different path, one that places the well-being of its citizens above the interests of corporations. By critically examining the failures of the U.S. model and embracing progressive policies, Poland can chart a more just and equitable future. This requires challenging the dominance of neoliberal economics and pursuing policies that prioritize social welfare, environmental sustainability, and economic fairness.

Standing Up to U.S. Influence: The Digital Tax Initiative

One area where Poland can assert its sovereignty and resist U.S. pressure is through the implementation of a digital tax. The Polish Ministry of Digitization is revisiting the idea of introducing a digital tax aimed at large global tech companies operating in Poland. This move aligns with broader European efforts to ensure that tech giants pay a fair share of taxes and contribute to the national economy.

A digital tax would target international tech corporations that generate significant profits in Poland but pay minimal taxes due to aggressive tax optimization strategies. The goal is to create a fairer tax system that reflects the realities of the digital economy, where traditional tax frameworks often fall short.

Countries like France, Austria, the United Kingdom, and Italy have already introduced similar digital taxes, with rates ranging from 2% to 7.5% of revenues generated in each market. While Poland is considering similar measures, the U.S. has historically opposed such taxes, threatening retaliatory actions against countries that implement them. Donald Trump’s appointed envoy to Warsaw has recently issued a warning to Poland regarding its plans to implement the digital tax on tech giants, describing it as a “self-destructive” decision that will “only hurt Poland and its relations with USA.” Standing firm on the digital tax, however, would be an important step in asserting Poland’s economic sovereignty.

Conclusion

Deregulation is not a path to economic prosperity but a means to further enrich the corporate elite while undermining the rights of workers and the health of the planet. Polish politicians must critically examine the lessons from the United States and reject the deregulatory agenda that is harming both workers and the environment. Moreover, initiatives like the digital tax can help assert Poland's sovereignty from the US and support a more equitable economic system. By prioritizing the public good over corporate profits, Poland must aim to create a more just, fair, and sustainable future.
